This is a complicated question (1) I would put Pashtuns at about 55 percent of the population (2) the issue is that AS PASHTUNS SETTLE IN CITIES THEY TEND TO FORGET PASHTU AND ARE CLASSIFIED AS PERSIAN SPEAKING LIKE HERAT HAS OVER 70 percent Pashtuns but they can only speak Persian (3) the issue is controversial politically (4) practically Dari (Persian) is official as well as educational language of Afghanistan (5) tajiks are central Asian people mostly north of line Kabul shindand and of central Asian origin and second largest ethnic group of Afghanistan following Pashtuns Listen to the most recent episode of my podcast: Afghanistan -History Summed up
