A REGIMENT WITH LARGE NUMBER OF HINDUSTANI RAJPUTS WHICH DEFENDED KALAT GHILZAI AGAINST REPEATED AFGHAN ATTACKS FOR SOME 6 MONTHS IN 1842  12th KELAT I GHILZAI  BATTALION (POST 1903 12TH  BOMBAY PIONEERS)   Raised 1838 LUDHIANA 1838 AS 3RD REGIMENT OF SHAH SHUJAS FORCE BY CAPTAIN BEATSON OF ENGLISH EAST INDIA COMPANY   PERFORMED OUTSTANDINGLY IN FIRST AFGHAN WAR IN ITS PHENOMENAL DEFENCE OF KALAT I GHILZAI IN ZABUL PROVINCE ALONG WITH 55 EUROPEAN SOLDIERS AND 247 SOLDIERS OF 43 BENGAL NATIVE INFANTRY, 22 INDIAN GUNNERS , 23 INDIANS BENGAL SAPPERS AND MINERS LED BY 7 RESOLUTE BRITISH OFFICERS- THE BATTALION SERVED NIL FATAL CASUALTIES IN A SIEGE THAT LASTED FROM JANUARY 1842 TO MAY 1842 REPULSING AN ATTACK BY 6000 AFGHANS-THE DEFENCE WAS LED BY A YOUNG CAPTAIN  JOHN H CRAIGIE   THE ENGLISH EAST INDIA COMPANY OFFICERS LEADING THE ARMY WERE DEEPLY IMPRESSED AND NAMED THE BATTALION KELAT I GHILZIE REGIMENT IN 1842-THE BATTALION SURVIVED 1857 AS IT WAS LOCATED IN HEART OF PRO ENGLISH EAST INDIA COMPANY TERRITORY AT PESHAWAR THEN PART OF PUNJAB   IN REWARD FOR ITS LOYALTY THE BATTALION WAS UPGRADED TO REGULAR REGIMENT IN 1861 AND RENAMED  13TH REGIMENT AND IN THE SAME YEAR 12TH REGIMENT OF BENGAL NATIVE INFANTRY   TOOK PART IN SECOND AFGHAN WAR AND WAS GARRISONED AT KALAT I GHILZAI AGAIN WITH ITS  HINDUSTANI MUSLIM SUBEDAR MAJOR WHO WAS PART OF ITS SIEGE IN 1842   MADE ALL HINDUSTANI MUSLIM UNIT IN 1893 EXPERIMENT   MADE 12 BENGAL PIONEER BATTALION (KELAT I GHILZIE REGIMENT) IN 1903 AND MADE AN ALL NON MUSLIM UNIT   WW ONE IT SENT REINFORCEMENTS TO UNITS ON FRONTS- SENT ITS MACHINE GUN SECTION TO OPERATIONS IN PERSIA- PARTCIPATED IN MARRI AREA OPERATIONS IN 1918 AND IN MOHMAND BLOCKADE- NUMBERED 2ND BATTALION , 2ND BOMBAY PIONEERS IN 1922-IN  1933 ALL PIONEER BATTALIONS WERE DISBANDED ONE CONSIDERATION BEING TO EMPLOY TRIBAL PASHTUNS INSTEAD AS CIVILIAN LABOUR SO THAT SOME INCENTIVE IS GIVEN TO TRIBAL PASHTUNS  ON 13 MARCH 1933 THIS PROUD BATTALION DEPOSITED ITS COLOURS AT VICEROYS HOUSE IN DELHI -  A RESULT OF STUPIDITY OF PETTY PARSIMONY DESPITE OUTSTANDING SERVICE.  MAJOR A.H AMIN (RETIRED)
