Soviet Afghan war was not a conventional war - in modern guerrilla warfare one power leaves a country like USA left Vietnam or ussr left Afghanistan - to call it defeat would be extremely naieve or myopic - USA is today all set to leave Afghanistan but to call it defeat would be incorrect - Afghanistan war of 1979–89 and of 2000–21 were proxy wars with real fighters being CIA isi MI etc and afghans being mere proxies - note that Afghanistan was never there in history till 1747- it was always part of some empire - between 1842 and 1919 it was a British vassal- similarly afghan USA war was a war between Pakistan proxies and USA and to call it a USA defeat would be ludicrous to the extreme
