Major Sabir Kamal LAWRENCE COLLEGE MURREE —originally 10 FF and later from 13 FF was Sitara-e-Jurat & BAR in east pakistan 1971 civil war and second time in 1971 at Hilli. As per BM of the brigade 13 FF was CURIOUSLY UNEMPLOYED THROUGHOUT THE WAR but SABIRS COMPANY SAW FULL ACTION AS PART OF 4 FF operations —He laid down his life fighting most gallantly on 8 December 1971 in the battle of Hilli, East Pakistan. He was originally recommended for Nishan-e-Haider.His 13 FF company was under command 4 FF at Hilli and was thus not with 13 FF -Many officers of 4 FF have questioned exaggerated claims about battle of Hilli whereas these officers hold the view that Hilli was largely a 4 FF battle - more on this later as this scribe meets various direct participants— according to the brigade Major Col Anis Ataullahs account 4 FF fought extremely well - but was hastily withdrawn at the end of the battle and could not maintain its cohesion to fight at bogra— 32 Baluch was badly employed by the brigade commander and told to hastily leave prepared defences as a result of which the unit suffered heavy casualties and finally disintegrated - 8 Baluch as per Col Anis (the BM an outstanding officer from a religious community later ham handedly declared non Muslims by Pakistani state ). fought outstandingly and preserved its cohesion throughout the war staying as a coherent battalion till ceasefire at bogra — 13 FF as per colonel Anis remained CURIOUSLY UNEMPLOYED — except Major Sabir kamals company throughout the war - NOTE THAT HILLI IS NOT JUST SOME SUPER MARTIAL
ISLAMIC ARMY WINNING BUT ALSO TRIUMPH OF DEFENCE OVER OFFENCE AS A FORM
OF WAR —IN THE SAME WAR AN INDIAN INFANTRY BRIGADE DEFEATED FOUR PAKISTANI INFANTRY BRIGADES IN CHHAMB TILL ARMOUR OUTFLANKED THE BRIGADE— FINALLY CO 4 FF COL
MUMTAZ WAS EXTREMELY CRITICAL ABOUT BRIG TAJAMMULS ROLE IN BATTLE AND EVEN CARRIED OUT AN EXHAUSTIVE ANALYSIS REBUTTING TAJAMMULS VERSION AS PRESENTED IN HIS BIOGRAPHY — Major Agha H Amin (Retired) —-Description THE POWER OF DEFENCE IN WAR —ALTHOUGH 66 BRIGADE FORMED A LODGEMENT OF 3000 YARDS THE INDIAN 191 BRIGADE FRONT REMAINED INTACT Battle of Chamb 1971 THREE BATTALIONS STOP FOUR INFANTRY BRIGADES- PAKISTANS 111 BRIGADE INFAMOUS IN REMOVING MICKEY MOUSE CIVILIAN GOVERNMENTS WAS TOTAL FAILURE ONLY LATER IN THE BREAKTHROUGH IN CHAMB- SIMILAR LAURELS WERE ACHIEVED BY 66 BRIGADE AND 20 BRIGADE-THE INDIANS LOST CHAMB ONLY BECAUSE OF THEIR OWN INEFFICIENCY IN NOT HAVING THE MINEFIELD BETWEEN JHANDA AND BARSALA BECAUSE OF INDIAN GHQs FAILURE IN NOT PASSING TIMELY INTEL Battle of Chamb 1971 https://www.amazon.com/Battle-Chamb-1971-Agha-Amin/dp/1515084957/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1508947645&sr=1-4&keywords=agha+h+amin The 23 Division was the only formation whose performance was appreciated even by the enemy. Thus the following was the opinion of various Indians about the war performance of 23 Division and General Eftikhar:- "Major General Iftikhar Khan, the Divisional Commander, showed skill and determination in carrying out his misison. (58) "The enemy commander showed commendable flexibility. Having achieved surprise by using the northern approach, he switched to the south when he found himself firmly checked at Mandiala crossings" (59) "The permanent loss of tactically and economically valuable territory on the west bank of Munawar Tawi was the most serious reverse suffered in the 1971 war” (60) In the Second World War one percent of the pilots of the US Air Force were responsible for shooting down in air fights some 40% of enemy war planes. (61) During the decisive battle of Assaye the British Infantry Regiment 74th Foot did bulk of the fighting and its casualties amounted to 501 whereas the other European casualties of all other units were just 143. (62) In 1857 the British casualties at the siege of Delhi exceeded British casualties at all other battles in 1857 totalled by some 200 additional casualties. (63) it is a fact of history that very often bulk of the fighting is done by a qualitatively superior force; as we have seen in the above mentioned instances. For 1971 war also strictly keeping the facts in mind almost half of casualties sustained by the army on the western front were borne by the valiant 23 Division. Thus while the total army casualties on the western front were 4958 (64) those of 23 Division alone were 2216 (65) On the other hand at times it has been stated that 23 Division could not have captured Palllanwala since the Indians were too strong east of Tawi. These are writers about whom Clausewitz warned us long go when he said:- Not to be led astray and intimidated by the danger of which thirty years later people still wrote and spoke”.
