A Great Warrior by Major A.H Amin

On 25th May 1981 I saw a very spirited third termer in the battalion mess. He was fiery and charged and his zest for life was not easy to define. This was one GC Iqbal who could be picked out from a mile by his peculiar gait and unique personality . Iqbal was not very tall but his personality had a subtle radiance which made him different from the crowd. When I was commissioned in 11 Cavalry and joined on 27 March 1983 at Kharian , we met again , as then lieutenant Iqbal was serving in the light S and T battalion of our brigade. My contacts with Captain Iqbal became extremely frequent as his commanding officer Colonel Haidar Ali Durrani was heading the court of Inquiry investigating my tiff with my commanding officer on 9 August 1984.When the inquiry commenced I had no idea that colonel Haider Ali Durrani had earlier served with my father and both had an excellent working relationship . Colonel Haidar was a harsh investigator and kept all on their toes. I spent long hours in his unit. Thus myself and Captain Iqbal became good friends.Iqbal at that time as we saw him was a very casual carefree officer. Master orienteer of our brigade who no one could match in orienteering. One morning as we had tea break in his unit , the colonel , a harsh disciplinarian asked Iqbal why he was late for morning parade ? Iqbal replied " sir it was raining " . Durrani retorted " so you are a soldier and afraid of rain ? " Iqbal who was normally not in the habit of answering back , gave a very poetic reply " SIR JAB WAQT AAYEGAA TO GOLIOON KEE BARISH KO BHEE PAAR KAROONGA" . Colonel Durrani just laughed . We later wondered , an S & T officer going through a hailstorm of bullets ? I was posted out of Kharian in April 1985 and all was forgotten . In 1987 we learnt that Captain Iqbal was killed in action in Siachen and was awarded an HJ .He had joined the SSG in 1985 or so and was posted to Siachen. In October 1990 I was posted to Armour School and called upon Colonel Haidar Ali Durrani now deputy commandant ASC School. We recollected that teabreak when Iqbal had made a very poetic statement.Colonel Durrani recollected that he could not forget Iqbals reply and did have a premonition that Iqbal would accomplish great things in life.God Bless Captain Iqbal , a great officer and a soldier.
