Listen to the most recent episode of my podcast: British east India company officers of First Punjab cavalry https://anchor.fm/max-hoffman8/episodes/British-east-India-company-officers-of-First-Punjab-cavalry-em33mt Listen to the most recent episode of my podcast: British east India company officers of First Punjab cavalry 21st PRINCE ALBERT VICTORS OWN (FRONTIER FORCE) (DALYS HORSE) SERIOUS FACTUAL DISCREPANCIES IN COL EFFENDIS HISTORY WHICH WERE ENTIRELY AVOIDABLE-MAJOR A,H AMIN (RETIRED) 1st Punjab Cavalry in 1857 21st PRINCE ALBERT VICTORS OWN (FRONTIER FORCE) (DALYS HORSE) SERIOUS FACTUAL DISCREPANCIES IN COL EFFENDIS HISTORY WHICH WERE ENTIRELY AVOIDABLE-MAJOR A,H AMIN (RETIRED) RAISED ON 18 MAY 1849 AT PESHAWAR BY AN INFANTRY OFFICER LT DALY OF ENGLISH EAST INDIA COMPANYS PRIVATE ARMYS 1ST BOMBAY FUSILERS-AN ALL EUROPEAN UNIT- WITH DALY WERE LIEUT NUTHALL OF MADRAS INFANTRY AS 2IC AND CORNET FORBES OF COMPANYS PRIVATE 1ST BENGAL CAVALRY AS ADJUTANT.THE NUCLEUS WAS HINDUSTANI –MORE PRECISELY RANGHARS FROM HISSAR, ROHTAK AND GURGAON ABOUT 280 IN NUMBER TO WHOM WERE ADDED 100 SIKHS AND ABOUT 150 PATHANS.THE COST OF A SOWAR WITH EQUIPMENT AND MOUNT AS PER DALY WAS 63 RUPEES WHICH DALY RECOVERED BY DEDUCTIONS FROM SALARIES SUBSEQUENTLY.INTERESTINGLY EFFENDI DOES NOT MENTION CLASS COMPOSITION OF 1ST PUNJAB CAVALRY AT ALL , WHICH IS EXTREMELY ODD . LIEUTENANT W.T HUGHES ASSUMED COMMAND OF THE UNIT ON 1ST MAY 1852 BUT THIS IS NOT MENTIONED IN COL EFFENDIS BOOK- HE WAS SUCCEEDED BY LT HARDING OF 45TH NATIVE INFANTRY ON 18 OCTOBER 1854 BUT THIS TOO IS NOT MENTIONED IN EFFENDIS BOOK. THE UNIT SAW ACTION IN KOHAT, HANGU AND THAL FROM RAISING TILL 1856 WHEN IT WAS MOVED TO SOUTH WEST TIP OF PUNJAB ,A PROVINCE WHICH NEVER EXISTED BEFORE EAST INDIA COMPANY MADE ONE IN 1849 BY COMBINING LAHORE AND MULTAN PROVINCES.1ST PUNJAB CAVALRY WAS TASKED WITH KEEPING AN EYE ON BUGTIS WHO RAIDEED THE FAR WEAKER MAZARIS AND DRESHAKS IN SOUTH DG KHAN. IN 1857 1ST PUNJAB CAVALRY WAS MOVED TO MULTAN TO DISARM THE REBELLIOUS INFANTRY BATTALIONS- THE HINDUSTANI (RANGHARS) OBSERVING THAT THEY WERE IN HEART OF LOYAL PRO ENGLISH EAST INDIA COMPANY TERRITORY WISELY KEPT LOYAL- HOWEVER ONCE THE UNIT WAS ORDERED TO DELHI –THE COMPANYS OFFICERS WISELY FORMED A NON HINDUSTANI SQUADRON AT KARNAL FOR SERVICE AT DELHI- WHILE THE REGIMENT WAS DEPLOYED WITH RHQ SAHARANPUR- THE REGIMENT PART ESCORTED THE SIEGE TRAIN FROM FEROZPUR TO DELHI- THERE WERE HOWEVER CASES OF DESERTIONS OF RANGHARS AT KARNAL AND AT SAHARANPUR AND AROUND WHERE IN ONE CASE 16 DESERTED AND JOINED THE REBELS AT BHAUN THANA-THOUGH THIS INCIDENT WAS CLEARLY MENTIONED IN THE HISTORY EFFENDI SIMPLY OMMITTED IT OR MAY POSSIBLY MAY NOT EVEN HAVE BOTHERED TO READ IT—THERE IS ALSO SERIOUS FAILING IN LIST OF COMMANDING OFFICERS GIVEN BY EFFENDI-LIKE HUGHES AND HARDING WHO COMMANDED THE UNIT ARE NOT MENTIONED—LT W.G HUGHES WAS CLEARLY COMMANDING 1ST PUNJAB CAVALRY IN 1857 BUT EFFENDI WITH A STROKE OF PEN OR HIS CLERKS COMPUTER KEY MADE THIS OFFICER VANISH FROM HISTORY OF 1ST PUNJAB CAVALRY—THAT A LIEUTENANT HUGHES WAS COMMANDING A CAVALRY REGIMENT WAS NOT AS PER INDO PAK SENSIBILITIES ! WHEN 1ST PUNJAB CAVALRY ARRIVED AT AMBALA CLEAR ORDERS WERE GIVEN TO FORM A SQUADRON OF PATHANS, PUNJABIS AND SIKHS , RACES CONSIDERED MOST LOYAL TO ENGLISH EAST INDIA COMPANY- SO THE MAJORITY OF THE REGIMENT HINDUSTANIS (RANGHARS) WERE OMITTED AS FAR AS OPS AT DELHI WERE CONCERNED- EFFENDI CONDESCENDINGLY MENTIONS THAT THE REGIMENT HAD SOME HINDUSTANIS WHEREAS AS PER THE ONLY PREVIOUS OFFICIAL HISTORY OF 1ST PUNJAB CAVALRY THE REGIMENTS MAJOR MANPOWER COMPONENT WERE HINDUSTANIS (RANGHARS) 280 , AS COMPARED TO 100 SIKHS AND 150 PATHANS- AND FOR THIS FALLACIOUS CLAIM EFFENDI QUOTES INDIAN ARMOURED CORPS HISTORIAN MAJ GEN SANDHU—INTERESTINGLY EFFENDI TOTALLY OMITS THE VERY MUCH AVAILABLE FIRST OFFICIAL HISTORY OF IST PUNJAB CAVALRY AT ALL FROM HIS BIBLIOGRAPHY AND SOURCES—WHILE THE SQUADRON OF EXTRA LOYAL TROOPS DETACHED TO DELHI WAS COMMANDED BY LT J WATSON- 1ST PUNJAB CAVALRY WITH RHQ AT SAHARANPUR AND NEARBY WAS COMMANDED BY LT WJ HUGHES WHO WAS PROMOTED CAPTAIN ON 24 DEC 1857 WITH ANTE DATE OF 1ST JUNE 1857—CAPTAIN COSSERAT OF 1ST PUNJAB CAVALRY WAS WOUNDED IN BATTLE OF ROORKE AND SUBSEQUENTLY DIED OF HIS WOUNDS BUT THIS INCIDENT ALSO DID NOT MERIT EFFENDIS ATTENTION IN HIS HISTORY—HUGHES BECAME A MAJOR IN LATE 1858 AND 1ST PUNJAB CAVALRY TOOK PART IN THE COLD WEATHER CAMPAIGN AGAINST REBELS—ON1ST MAY 1859 HUGHES NOW IN VERY HIGH ESTEEM WAS APPOINTED TO COMMAND ALL THREE REGIMENTS OF HODSONS HORSE AND IN HIS PLACE CAPTAIN H.L MILLETT COMMANDED 1ST PUNJAB CAVALRY TILL 1ST JANUARY 1860 WHEN HUGHES REJOINED—THIS AGAIN IS NOT MENTIONED IN EFFENDIS HISTORY AND HUGHES IS TOTALLY WIPED OUT AND MISSING ! HUGHES WAS PROMOTED LT COL AND WAS RECONFIRMED IN 1ST PUNJAB CAVALRYS COMMAND AGAIN IN 1864— LT COL CS MACLEAN MENTIONED BY COL EFFENDI WAS HUGHES SECOND IN COMMAND IN 1864—HE IS MENTIONED IN COMMAND OF THE UNIT IN SECOND AFGHAN WAR—THE REGIMENT TOOK PART IN AFGHAN WAR AND WAS GRANTED BATTLE HONOURS OF AFGHANISTAN 1878-80 AND AHMAD KHEL-IN 1858 IT WAS GRANTED BATTLE HONOURS OF DELHI AND LUCKNOW-RAISED AS 1ST REGIMENT OF PUNJAB CAVALRY IN 1849- 1ST REGIMENT OF CAVALRY PUNJAB IRREGULAR FORCE IN 1851—1ST REGIMENY OF CAVALRY PUNJAB FRONTIER FORCE IN 1864 AND ALREADY REGULARISED IN 1861—1ST (PRINCE ALBERT VICTORS OWN) REGIMENT OF PUNJAB CAVALRY IN 1890---21ST PRINCE ALBERT VICTORS OWN CAVALRY FRONTIER FORCE- IN 1903---EFFENDI MAKES NO MENTION IN HIS BOOK THAT THERE WERE NO PUNJABI MUSLIMS IN 1ST PUNJAB CAVALRY FROM RAISING IN 1849 TILL 1921-22 WHEN PUNJABI MUSLIMS WERE INTRODUCED AND HINDUSTANIS ELIMINATED BASED ON BRITISH SUSPICIONS AGAINST HINDUSTANIS AFTER REBELLION OF 5TH LIGHT INFANTRY AT SINGAPORE.THE UNIT SAW ACTION IN MESOPOTAMIA IN 1916-18 AND WAS MERGED WITH 23 PUNJAB CAVALRY TO FORM PAVO 11TH CAVALRY FRONTIER FORCE IN 1921-22.
